Band Practice Skeyton
Lovely warm day, but I was a bit held up in Norwich so got to the hall a few minutes late to find Dave and son Martin already set up and with tea brewed. Martin seems fine and is happy with life in Fakenham. As I set up we talked about things we could fix and had a bit of a run through the Beatles medley before Nigel arrived. Once we got going we started with Van Morrisons “Brown Eyed Girl” with Nigel singing a la Van the man. We just needed to sort out understandings on the bass link then it started to work very well; we can see this going in set 1 as a change for “Beautiful Body”. Next Up was the Beatles which was going well by the time we moved onto the Buddy Holly medley. We ran it though and made a few changes = cut down “Peggy Sue” a bit, add a repeat last line to “Oh Boy” ending of “Umm diddle um dum Oh! Boy!” with an abrupt “Oh Boy over Ab A. Then we had a long session working up “Mony Mony into Baby Come Back” with Nigel leading as a 3rd set dance sequence. That was going well so we got him to do Ray Charles “What’d I say” as a Set 1 or 2 mover with Dave and I playing the parts of the Raelets. I used tremolo guitar to simulate a Rhodes piano and that worked well. So well I thought I might try it in “Baby Come Back”. We finished off the session by playing through the Status Quo medley. I think we now know what we have to do – its just a question of putting it into practice and getting live feel. As we packed up we said we would try and give all the songs we had practiced a run on Saturday. For some reason we were all humming "The Monster Mash" as we loaded up. Got away about 10:30 and home for midnight because I was diverted round road repairs near the sugar factory.
